This morning, I made another donation to the Obama campaign. I have probably donated more than I should given my financial situation, but this is the first time I've ever been a "part" of a political campaign (I volunteered during the primaries). When Obama turned down public funding, I was skeptical. I was worried that this would cloud many voters' view of his stance against corruption in politics. However, I think it's fairly clear that a majority of Obama's donations are coming from individuals and not PACs, and I think this is a good thing.
But why is this model working? Why are people like me giving money? I'll tell you why. It's because it's not about the money. It's about being part of a movement. But you'll say this: "Jim. A movement? All you're doing is writing a check." This is true. I am not currently marching in the streets (though, I did knock on doors and take an active role in the March caucus). However, the Obama campaign has even worked out a way for donations to be more than just donations.
My donation this morning was part of the Obama campaign's matching program. I pledge to give $25, and they find someone else who decides to match that donation. My donation is accompanied by a personal message, and I get a personal message in return. Here was my message:
I'm a graduate student, and I have given to the campaign a number of times. I can't afford to give much because I don't have much, but this campaign has convinced me it's worth it. Please consider contributing to this campaign and helping to make a difference.
Here's the return message from the person who matched my contribution. Her name is Dorna and she's from New London, NH:
Hi James,
I'm also a graduate student ('mature' as they say) here in Cambridge England where I live. This is the first time I have been driven to get organized with an absentee ballot, have donated before, and will likely again. I remember the hope of the John Kennedy days, and agree with you: 'It's worth it.'
The skeptics will say this isn't a truly human connection and that Dorna and I are merely two people "writing a check." They will say I don't "know" Dorna. But you know what? I kinda do.
